Decorating For A Toddler
Colour -
Now you can experiment with colour. Young kids love lively shades. Your selection could be inspired by something the child likes (celebrities, a sport or recreational activity, favourite animals, etc). Boys usually prefer darker shades such as blue and red. Girls lean toward vivid colours such as violet and pink.
Bedding and Linen –
Coordinate fabrics, bed linens and pictures with the theme of the room. Floral, patterns, themes or bright colours – each child has his or her own particular likes and dislikes. Allow them to choose their own styles so long as it fits in with the decorating scheme. Use decorative borders on lampshades or waste paper baskets to coordinate the look.
Furniture –
Practical and hardwearing is the key – especially if you have young boys. Furniture needs to be able to take the knocks and bumps of active play. Look for solid pieces that cannot be chipped or cracked – spending more now will save you less over time. Unfinished pine furniture allows you to coordinate furniture to match any decor or themes you may want in the room, and this type of furniture is easily sanded down and repainted.
Storage –
At this stage of their development, children need lots of toys and as much space as possible. Storage becomes a matter of life or clutter. Baskets and toy boxes are great for packing away smaller items – as long as you have space for them. It’s a good idea to keep this in mind when shopping for furniture – look for beds with built-in storage or sufficient space underneath to fit bins and baskets.
