Never Diet Again
Our health & wellness is made up of more than just what we eat & drink. Our physical bodies are very intricately linked to our mental & emotional states. Happiness is an intricate part of our health.
Here is a poem written by a man called Alfred D. Souza who realised that life was passing him by, because he was always waiting for something. So be happy NOW and stop waiting ….. Happiness By Alfred D. Souza For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time to still be served, a debt to be paid - then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life…. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten kilograms, until you gain ten kilograms, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until you've had a drink, until you've sobered up, until you die, until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. Remember that “health is a state of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing … and not just the absence of disease!” WHO 1974 LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND MAKE EVERYDAY COUNT! This doesn’t however mean that you can go overboard & eat everything under the sun because tomorrow you may die! I think most dieters feel that they are in a perpetual state of guilt, denial, deprivation & self-loathing. Come on all you ladies out there who have ever been on a diet … admit it, you have at some stage - before, during or after you have “come-off” your diet, felt at least one (if not all) of these emotions! Now I have some good news for you. You never have to go ON or OFF a diet again in your life! Let me repeat that, because I know you are disbelieving, but you NEVER have to go ON or OFF a diet ever again …. If (yes there is an if) you change your attitude to food & how you eat. Now this is where the challenge comes in …. The biggest change is not the food itself, as much as the attitude towards the food! 1. Forget the word DIET – it is a 4 letter word with so many negative connotations, that it is best forgotten. Eating plan, nourishment, nutrition - are better words to use 2. Your brain needs to be “retrained” to believe that food is for nourishment & enjoyment. 3. Your tastebuds need to be retrained – so that you can taste REAL food flavours. 4. Your food + diet memories, lifelong “indoctrination” & social stigma - need to change or be forgotten. 5. Your blood glucose (sugar) levels need to be balanced – this will affect you more than you can believe! 6. You need to eat MORE, not less – and not feel guilty about it! Of course - the correct healthy foods that your body needs. HOW? These are all things you can do with your family as well … so encourage them to join with you in starting a healthier LIFESTYLE PLAN … * Everyday as often as you can remember you need to say positive affirmations about yourself. Find something positive in actions you do all day/ everyday & affirm them. Find positives about they way you look & affirm them. Eg: If you are good at conflict resolution: “I love the way I cope with the children when they fight - I am good at helping them resolve their issues.” * Start to choose foods that are natural foods – ie. the ones that you find unprocessed in nature (I’ve never seen a doughnut tree before!). Foods that are, what I like to call Nature’s “FAST FOODS” – it’s faster to grab an apple, banana or pear from the fruit bowl, than it is to drive to the shop to buy a chocolate! * Say positive things about the food that you are going to eat. Give thanks for the goodness, looks, taste & smell. Eg: “This smooth, ripe mango is deliciously sweet & juicy and smells like honey. I’m going to enjoy eating every bite as it nourishes my body!” I mean you don’t have to get all poetic, but you get the gist? If you believe in God, then give thanks to the maker of the food – and don’t just rattle off a memorised prayer – make-up a new thanksgiving prayer every time you eat. * Eat slowly, sitting down, chew your food well & enjoy the moment of eating pleasure. Bring in the other senses and not just taste as part of your eating experience – sight, smell, touch/texture (sound to a lesser extent – popcorn is one that pops to mind! * It is OK – and you need to say this to yourself EVERYDAY– it is OK to have some unhealthy food occasionally! If you feel like some ice-cream – then have a little ice-cream, but not the whole tub! If you feel like some chocolate, then have 1 or 2 blocks, but NOT the whole slab! (PS. the darker, richer & more expensive the chocolate, I find, helps me to have only a little!). You will find that once your taste-buds start “re”-learning what good healthy food should taste like, and once your blood sugar levels are more balanced, you will find you have fewer cravings! * Try to add natural herbs & spices to your food for flavour – less salt (sodium chloride), sugar (sucrose), artificial sweeteners (aspartame etc.), flavour enhancers (MSG etc.), colourants (tartrazine etc.) and preservatives (sodium benzoate etc.) All in all – less processed, man-made “foods” and more foods closer to their natural state. Ever heard of the saying – “It takes 21 days to form a habit”, well I’m not sure who said that, but they were right! 21 days of perseverance and things start to change – they become easier to do & a part of your everyday life. Natural foods start to taste better & the unnatural ones start tasting worse! Give it a try! What do you have to loose?........ Only the fear of the word “DIET”!
